Cozy DIY Sweater Pillow
Happy Thursday everyone! Can you believe less than three weeks remain until Christmas? I have yet to purchase a single gift! I’ve been busy decorating my home and crafting a few more holiday decorations to compliment my DIY holiday village and my burlap table runner (which will be re-used for my Christmas table setting). A few weeks ago I picked up a couple of knitted sweaters at the Goodwill with the hopes of turning them into decorative pillows like the ones sold at Pottery Barn for lots and lots of money.
Last night the weather was stormy and cold, which is unusual for the Phoenix metro area, and it felt like the perfect time for this cozy project.
This was the easiest project and I was able to use the front and back of the sweater to make two pillows, utilizing some coordinating muslin fabric for the pillow backs.
I basically cut the front and back of the sweater to the size of my pillow form, adding about 1/2 inch seam allowance on all sides (my pillow form was 18″ x 18″ so I cut my fabric to measure 19″ x 19″). Then I cut two pieces of muslin to make an envelope opening for the back, because I wanted to be able to remove the pillow forms for future projects. To make the envelope backing I added six inches to the size of my pillow form (18″ pillow form + 6″ = 24″ L x 19″ W), then I divided that piece in half lengthwise and cut. This left me with two 12″ x 19″pieces for the back of the pillow. The two back pieces were meant to overlap each other. Next I sewed a 1/2 hem on each of the two fabric edges, where the pieces overlap. The final step was to sew the front sweater piece to the back muslin pieces, with wrong sides facing each other. I turned my pillow inside-out, inserted my pillow form, and DONE!
If you need a visual, this gal made a great tutorial with detailed pics. I think these pillows add the perfect amount of “cozy” to my space, and they were inexpensive and easy to make.
I guess I should really get started on my shopping list now! Thank you so much for stopping by…

Wonderful idea Amy! Gives me a good idea on how to use up some of those “ugly” Christmas sweaters a good re-do.
So true! Recycling at its best!
