A Loss, A Gain and an Update

Please excuse the long silence; I took a little time off to concentrate on my family as we mourn the death of my sweet Grandmother.  She was a beautiful lady and because of her, the world has been a better place  for the past 84 years.  She will be incredibly missed.

I have not felt creative or inspired and I know that I just needed some time to work through this loss, and ease back into my regular routine.  Home improvement projects have been sparse but I have accomplished an amazing amount of cleaning and organizing.  When I feel like things in my life are out of my control, cleaning and organizing gives me something  I CAN control; which ultimately makes me feel better.

On the other end of the spectrum, something I am extremely happy to share; my husband has returned home after working out of state for the last five months!  It has been a long, rough road solo parenting two teens (and surviving the holidays) while he was away!  And while, at least the kids and I had each other, poor hubby was all alone on the other side of the country!  With his return, our little family has re-gained some much needed normalcy and stability.

Speaking of home, here is a quick update on the projects we have (and don’t have) going on around the house:

The Master Bedroom Refresh has been put on hold; hubby and I decided it would be best, under the circumstances, to concentrate our efforts on finishing up the dining room first.  So far, we’ve painted and installed picture frame molding,

Purchased a buffet and hutch for extra storage,

customized a cushion to fit our extra long dining bench,

and thrifted a few decor items that may or may not make it into the final room design.

After much agonizing, searching, and struggling to find a lighting fixture within our budget; we finally pulled the trigger and ordered one.  Honestly, it was over the budget we had set for lighting, but we sold the old fixture on Craigslist to offset the cost; and scrimped and saved on so many of the other purchases, we were able to justify it (plus, we bought it on sale and didn’t pay any shipping!).

I’m currently in the process of sewing some curtain panels for either side of the window (more on that catastrophe later), shopping for artwork to fill the walls, and either slip covering my existing chairs, or swapping them out for some new ones (more likely some “new to me” ones).  I’m holding off on painting the buffet and hutch until I see what the room looks like when its finished.  I kind of like the dark wood right now and I think it might just work in the room “as is”.  To be determined…

So,  although it is slow to happen, progress is being made.  For many reasons, this room has been a real challenge for me, but I feel like we are finally close to the finish line and I’m excited to see it all come together.  I hope to be posting pictures of the finished room soon.  In the meantime, I truly appreciate each and every one of you that stops by my little corner of the world each day.  Please know that your presence and your comments mean the world to me.  Thank you!

Until Next Time,
