Dining Room Makeover Reveal
Our dining room makeover is finally finished and it’s time for the big reveal! Yay! It has been a long, slow process, but that’s just the way it goes around here sometimes. There are a few things I’d like to change (add a rug, change the accessories on top of the hutch), I just haven’t been able to pinpoint exactly what I’m looking for, so until I do, I’m calling this room “done”.
Just as a reminder; here are some photos comparing what the room looked like when we started all those months ago, to what it looks like now:
We started by designing a room in which we could incorporate our existing dining set, and the matching sideboard and hutch that we found on Craigslist (you can read more in this post). We then installed a chair rail (recycled from another room) and picture frame moldings (you can read about that here), and painted both the moldings and the wall above it.
Next, I searched far and wide for some fabric to make curtains out of, but had such a hard time finding something within my budget that would fit my extra tall windows (I needed 108″ long panels). I ended up falling in love with the pattern on a shower curtain, of all things, that I found at Homegoods. I decided to deconstruct the shower curtain and make my own curtain panels (more on that in a later post!)
My husband, Johnny, and I then purchased and installed a new chandelier. I modified a bench cushion to fit my dining room bench (you can read about that here), thrifted some chair covers to pull together my mis-matched chairs, hung some vintage silver trays as artwork, and accessorized using things I (mostly) already had.
We did stray a little bit from our original inspiration boards, but we allowed this room to evolve as we figured out how to make it serve the needs of our family in the best possible way. Regardless, I’m so happy to have this room finished! I feel like it finally reflects our family and the way we live.
Thank you so much for stopping by to see my see my dining room makeover reveal! Please let me know if you have any questions about anything you’ve seen, I’ll do my best to answer them!

super super cool transformation. It caught my eye because I am currently making plans for our Dining room as well. I love the look of creamy slipcovers and dark tables. Those chair slipcovers look like they might be from Sure Fit Slipcovers ? Do you know the brand? I got mine to cover our dark green dining room chairs from World Market. Pinning from here!!!! Check out my Dining Room plans if you get a chance… Following you now through Bloglovin.

Just over fromt he Monday link up party. The room looks beautiful! So much better than the old diningroom with that dark red paint!
I agree Kim; that red paint had to go! Thank you for your kind comments, and for stopping by!
Beautiful makeover! I love love love the light fixture. Such a good choice and balance between splurging and saving. The shower curtain drapes?… just fantastic! Bravo!
Thank you, Laura! So glad you stopped by!
Hopped over from the link party and wanted to send kudos to you for your DR reveal. You guys did an awesome job – taking the room from a bit boring, to a very cool and inviting space. The look is made even more special by the fact that it is in open view to what looks like might be an entry. Well done.
Teri
Thank you, Teri – we love how it turned out. It’s a room we enjoy spending time in now. Thank you so much for visiting!
Amy, your dining room turned out wonderful – I’m just changing over from a red dining room to blue – loving the transformation – lots more to do – love your new chandelier light – I will be featuring your post in this week’s Home and Garden Thursday,
Kathy
Thank you for the kind words, Kathy (and the feature!) Best wishes on your dining room re-do; I’m heading over to your blog to follow along.
What a lovely room it is now and a very clever idea about the curtains!
Thank you, Deb! My meager budget has forced me to think outside the box!
Your dining room turned out so lovely! I absolutely love the wood tones and the white slip-covered chairs. As well as the silver trays on the wall. I can totally relate to using what is around the house to decorate…that is where my dining room is at for the moment until I can find what I love that is affordable to accessorize the way I would like.
Deb @ Seeking Lavender Lane
Thank you, Deb – it has been quite a process to get to this point (but soooo worth it)! Thank you so much for stopping by!
Love your dining room makeover, your chandelier is beautiful! Such a transformation!
We saved our pennies for that fixture, but it really “makes” the room! Thank you for stopping by – and for your kind comments!
Beautiful makeover! I love the silver trays on the wall!

Sherry
Thank you so much for the kind comments, and of course, for the feature! I love your blog and am so honored!
Your dining room is just absolutely stunning! The before and after photographs are truly inspiring.
Thank you Laurel – I’m so happy to have this room finished! Now my family and I can truly enjoy it. Thank you so much for stopping by!
Your room turned out beautifully! I can’t believe you were lucky to find those gorgeous slip covers by thrifting. The lantern over the table is the star of the show. What a great choice!
I definitely hit the thrifting “jackpot” when I found those slipcovers! You just never know what you’ll find at the second-hand store. Thank you so much for stopping in Stacey – and leaving such kind comments!
LOVE the curtain panels! Was seriously hoping you could point me to the fabric!
Anyway, BEAUTIFUL room!
Thank you so much, Katie! Believe me, I searched far and wide for the matching fabric, after finding the shower curtain in the “perfect” pattern/colors – with no luck! I did find something pretty similar, if you are interested: Tatiana panel from World Market ( ) It was my next, best choice. Hope this helps!
I love this space! So fresh and inviting. I can’t believe those slipcovers were thrifted! Lucky find for sure. Thanks for sharing at our party!! Sharing on FB XO XO
Thank you for your kind comments, Christy – and for the FB share! The slipcovers are definitely one of my all-time favorite thrift store finds. I’m so glad you stopped by!
I love this re-do, so pretty. I didn’t have much hope for that red and white room when you first moved there but it’s such a great place to hang out and relax over a meal in. Great job Amy!
~ Kate
Thanks, Kate! I agree, it’s much nicer than the “red room” to hang out in!
Beautiful room. I love the silver platters on the wall. What kind of Command strips did you use? Will they come off of the platters so that you can still use them?
Hi Wendy – thank you for stopping by! I used Command Picture and Frame Hanging Strips, size medium. Each strip holds up to 3 lbs. I used 2 strips on my heavier pieces. The beauty of Command Strips is that they are easily removable and leave your wall (and plates) damage and residue free. So far, so good with my silver trays. I should be able to use them just fine once I remove them from my wall.
Thanks. I have some wonderful old platters from my grandmother and I’d love to see them more often than when they come out of the cabinet for Thanksgiving. Great idea!
If you decide to use this idea, I would love to see a picture of the finished project
