Family Room Reveal – Thrifty, Stylish and Comfortable
Hi all, I hope you have been having a wonderful week! I’m back today to share a few pictures of my family room with you. Please keep in mind that it’s still a work in progress, but I feel like it is finally to a point where I can share that progress with you, without feeling too embarrassed.
When we moved into this house last summer, we only brought a few sticks of furniture with us from the house we were renting, knowing that those pieces would also be replaced as soon as we could afford it. Our new house has a very different floor plan from the rental house and most of our existing furniture just wasn’t going to work in our new space.
We sold most of our old stuff on Craigslist and started over from scratch. It has taken some time, but we’re almost to the point where the room functions well for our family and looks nice, too. If you’ve been reading for awhile you know that I’m on a super tight budget and, as with the entryway and dining room, I’ve furnished this room with items found on Craigslist, in thrift stores, at garage sales and on clearance. I re-painted, sewed and re-purposed as much as I could, and ultimately (after much work and patience), ended up with an (almost) finished space that our family enjoys spending time in.
The first change we made after moving in was the paint color. The walls are painted BM’s Revere Pewter. It’s a nice, neutral “greige” that has rich, warm undertones. We then installed new wood flooring. With the “bones” of the space finished, we moved on to finding the right furnishings. The sofa is the Carlisle Grand from Pottery Barn, purchased off Craigslist for an absolute steal. I love that the slipcovers can be removed and washed in my washing machine. With four pets and two messy teens, it’s made my life much easier! The bird throw pillow came with the sofa, along with a couple of others (not pictured), the orange pillow was found at Target, and the others were made from cloth napkins, sewn together by me (tutorial here).
The nesting tables were found on clearance and given a chalk paint makeover. Lamps and shades are from Target, a few years ago.
Both the leather recliner and the slipcovered chair were purchased off Craigslist, along with the rug and coffee table (at different times). The chair will eventually get a proper slipcover, but for now the vintage chenille bedspread works just fine. The antique drum table was a garage sale score.
The fun vintage milk crate is from the stuff I scored while visiting my Dad (you can read about it here and here). It’s currently being used to store magazines.
And there you have it, my family room reveal – thrifty, stylish and comfortable. Of course, there are still a few things left on the to-do list. My husband and I are currently re-finishing/re-purposing a console table that we’ll be using as an entertainment center in this room; I’ll be sharing that project with you soon. We also have some trim work and a pair of french doors to finish painting, and I’m still looking for the right drapes to cover the wall of windows and the french doors behind the leather chair. I’m also debating whether or not to switch out the current rug for a jute rug that has more texture and less pattern (any opinions?). For now I’m just happy to see the light at the end of the tunnel!
Thank you so much for taking the time to stop in and see my room tour! I truly appreciate your visits and your sweet comments. Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have, I’ll do my best to answer them!
Have a great weekend!
