Metal Pipe Laptop Table {The Home Depot Gift Challenge}

DIY Metal Pipe Laptop Table {Home Depot Challenge}

So glad you stopped by today, friends! I’ve recently been invited to join some blogging buddies in a monthly DIY gift challenge; and today we debut our very first challenge projects! Each month one of us will choose an item from Home Depot, then we each make a creative gift using that item.  THEN, we use another item from the Home Depot to wrap our gift, with the recipient in mind. This month our item was a copper plumbing tee, and I have to say; I’ve never seen a group of gals come up with so many clever projects! At the end of my post will be links to each of the other ladies’ posts – please make sure you stop by and see what they’ve created this month – I promise you’ll be amazed!

Home Depot Gift Challenge

As you can see from the picture at the top of this post, my project was a DIY Metal Pipe Laptop Table, made for my sweet hubby.  Our den/office is a complete disaster area at the moment, and my hubby is usually stationed at the coffee table on his work from home days. I decided to make things a little bit more comfortable for him by making him this laptop table using our monthly challenge item. And when he’s not using the table for work, he can use it as a TV type tray, for holding snacks and the remote control – perfect for game days!

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:

Supplies Needed

Circular Saw

Pipe cutter or reciprocating saw with metal cutting blade (I would recommend the pipe cutter! They are inexpensive and much less hassle than the reciprocating saw, which is what I used)

Electric drill and drill bit

2 – ¼” copper pipes in 10’ length

8 – ¼” 90 degree copper elbow fittings

2 – ¼” copper tees

Tape Measure

60 grit (coarse) sandpaper and sanding block

1 x 6 board in 5’ length

Scrap plywood in at least a 10” x 10” size

1 pkg ¾” copper tube straps (5 per package)

14 – ¾” long wood screws

Minwax stain in Special Walnut

Brush to apply stain

Rag to wipe stain off

Protective eye wear

Gather supplies and materials

Using pipe cutter or reciprocating saw, mark, then cut 10’ pipes down to the following sizes: (if using a saw, make sure you have strong clamps to hold your pipe to your work surface.  I ended up using clamps + my very strong friend to steady the pipes while cutting). Use sandpaper to smooth out rough edges.

                4 – 17” lengths

                3 – 12” lengths

                2 – 20” lengths

                2 – 6” lengths

Next, using the circular saw, cut the 1 x 6 into three 20” lengths

Sand the boards smooth

Using the electric drill, attach the 1 x 6 pieces together using scrap plywood and 6 wood screws

Stain the 1 x 6 pieces of wood

While stain is drying, assemble the table frame as follows:

Assemble base first using the two 20” pipes, one 12” pipe, and four copper elbows

Assemble the back pieces using (from bottom of base to top) two 6” pipes, two copper tees, (connect one 12” pipe to the two                 tees, as seen in picture), two 17” pipes, then two copper elbows

Assemble the top portion using two remaining 17” pipes, two remaining copper elbows, and the remaining 12” pipe

Push the frame together to tighten (you can also use plumbing adhesive for extra stability, but I found that the pipe pieces                    fit together quite snug).

Once the stained top is dry, position on the top of the frame, then attach using 4 copper tube straps (placed as seen in pictures), and the remaining eight wood screws.

And that’s it! I know it sounds complicated, but I promise the hardest part is cutting the metal pipes – the rest is easy, peasy!

The last thing I needed to do was wrap my gift. I needed something large enough to cover up the project, so I used a painters drop cloth.  I simply spread the drop cloth out on the ground, placed the laptop table in the middle, pulled the sides up around it and tied the ends into a knot at the top. I  then wrapped some jute twine around the knot, making a messy-type bow. I love that the wrapping materials can be re-used after this gift is opened!
