DIY Concrete Coasters
Happy Monday friends! Can you believe it’s already June 15th? I’m a little sad that June is already halfway over, but also happy because the 15th means it’s time for another Monthly Home Depot DIY Gift Challenge! Just in case you’re not familiar with the Monthly Gift Challenge, each month one blogger from our group of 13 will choose an item from Home Depot, then we each make a creative gift for a specified recipient using that item. This month it was Amanda from Dwelling In Happiness’ turn to chose our challenge item. Amanda chose concrete, and because Father’s Day is next weekend, the recipient is a father.
But the gift-giving doesn’t stop there! In honor of Father’s Day, we’re giving away a $100.00 gift card to – you guessed it – Home Depot! I don’t know about you, but I would love to be able to wrap up my fun DIY gift alongside a $100.00 Home Depot gift card! You’ll find a Rafflecopter at the end of this post, along with all the details on how to enter.
*This post is not endorsed or sponsored in any way by the Home Depot. We just love the store and its products and thought it would be a fun and challenging collaboration.
As you can see from the picture above, I decided to make beverage coasters for my favorite guy, the father of my two kiddos. This man is forever getting in trouble for leaving water marks on my furniture, so I figured I’d do us both a favor and make him some coasters. I love that my kiddos were able to get involved when it came time to paint them, making this gift a bit more personal. These coasters are something Mr. Rx will look at and use everyday, so he’ll be reminded of our love for him daily.
Anyhow, if you decide your guy could also use some coasters, here’s what you need to make your own:
Supplies
Quickcrete concrete (I bought the 60lb. bag, to use the extra for another project)
Protective gloves
Mixing bowl (preferably something disposable)
Something to mix with (again, preferably something disposable)
4 Paper or Styrofoam bowls (these will be your “molds”)
Painter’s tape (optional)
Stencils of your choice
Arylic paint in the color(s) of your choice
Paint brush
Rubber bumpers (for the bottom of the coasters)
Gather your supplies
Working in a well ventilated area, scoop out enough concrete mix to fill a plastic cup about halfway
To the mix, add roughly 1/2 that amount of water
Stir until thoroughly mixed
Draw a line inside your bowls, 3/4 inches from the bottom, to use as a guide when filling
Pour the concrete into the bowls and smooth the surface as much as possible (the mixture will be watery, but the excess moisture will evaporate as the concrete dries)
Place the bowls in a warm, sunny spot away from pets and children and allow to dry overnight
Once the concrete has dried, pop your new coasters out of the bowls
Use the paint and stencils to decorate your coasters (optional)
Put the rubber bumpers on the bottom side of the coasters (I don’t recommend skipping this step, as the bottom is quite rough)
And that’s it! Pour yourself a drink and enjoy your new coasters!
I hope you enjoyed this Home Depot Gift Challenge! Please make sure you stop by and visit the other talented bloggers participating in the challenge – just click on the pictures below to be taken to each site.

Thank you so much, Deb! My kiddos helped with the painting, so I can’t take any credit for that! It’s always hard to figure out what project to do, but this month I was in a time crunch and needed the concrete to dry fast, so I chose something small in size. Great logic, right?
These coaster turned out really cute! Love the designs you painted on each of them!
